Chapter 7
Falling Hard and Fast
“Morning,” Trace mumbled as my eyes fluttered awake.
“What time is it?” I groaned while stretching.
“Almost seven. Do you have time to have breakfast with me? I am determined to cook a meal for you before I send you home.” Trace got out of bed, cinching his robe around his waist.
“I have some time, but only if you have coffee.”
He chuckled. “Do I have coffee—woman, please. I know you don’t know me all that well yet, but you have to give me the benefit of the doubt every once in a while.”
Clint burst through the door, happily panting and wagging his tail at Trace’s feet.
“Morning, sweet boy,” I cooed at the pup.
He turned to me, leaping onto the bed and flopping right on top of me.
“Clint, come on.” Trace sighed, tugging at his collar. “It’s breakfast time.”
I pecked the adorable pupper on the nose before he rushed out the door and straight into the kitchen.
“You can borrow any of my clothes you’d be comfortable in. I’m going to start making some omelets.”
I watched as Trace ambled out of his room, completely in awe of the incredible night we’d spent together. I was taken aback by how comfortable I already felt with him and how easy it was to be in his presence.
After washing my face and gargling some mouthwash I found under his sink, I dug through his drawers to find basketball shorts and an old shirt to throw on. I took my time taking in the tastefully decorated master suite before joining Trace and Clint in the kitchen.
“You really do have a beautiful home,” I remarked, taking a seat on a barstool at the island counter.
Setting a cup of coffee and a plate full of food in front of me, Trace smiled. “I like it.”
“Sure beats my tiny one-bedroom apartment with hand-me-down everything.” I felt so inadequate all of a sudden. How could someone as amazing as Trace like someone as pathetic as me?
“There’s nothing wrong with a modest apartment you didn’t spend a small fortune to furnish. This place is pretty much for show, to be honest.” Trace looked around. “If I had it my way, I would be in a hunting cabin off in the woods with a bed in the middle and a cast-iron stove, simple and just enough for me and Clint. This was all the result of my parents’ nagging.”
“Family guilt trips—believe me, I get it.” I rolled my eyes. “I was supposed to be a lawyer like my father and brother. I’m the disappointment of a lifetime to my folks.”
“But you’re following your dreams. That’s what matters.” Trace took a seat next to me.
“Tell that to Judge Henderson,” I scoffed before popping a piece of egg into my mouth.
“Bill Henderson?” Trace questioned with a furrowed brow.
I gaped at him. “Yes…?”
“He’s a golf buddy of my father, Chet Hastings.” Trace rubbed his face. “What a small freaking world.”
“Holy hell, it really is. My dad talks about your father all the time.”
“Same here.
